What to do when iPhone says “Storage Full” while updating or taking photos
Summary. When your iPhone says storage is full, first find out which storage it means: the phone itself or your iCloud account. They are different problems with different fixes. For the phone, the fastest safe moves are to empty Recently Deleted, remove a few large videos and offload apps you rarely use, then try the update or the camera again.
Key takeaways
- “iPhone Storage Full” and “iCloud Storage Full” are different messages. Fixing one does not fix the other.
- A software update needs free room to download and to unpack. The exact amount depends on the update.
- Recently Deleted still counts as used space until you empty it.
- Do the quick wins first. The long cleanup can wait until the phone works again.
Step 1: Work out which storage is full
Read the message carefully.
- “Cannot Take Photo” or “not enough available storage” points at the iPhone. So does an update that says it cannot be installed because there is not enough space.
- “iCloud Storage Full” is about your iCloud account. Your photos and backups are not uploading, but the phone may still take photos. That needs a different fix, such as clearing iCloud or choosing a larger plan. Deleting photos on the iPhone with iCloud Photos on removes them from iCloud as well, so be careful.
Open Settings, General, iPhone Storage to see the bar for the phone itself. Wait a few seconds for it to load.
Step 2: The five-minute fixes
Start with the changes that are safe and fast.
- Empty Recently Deleted. In Photos, Albums, Utilities, Recently Deleted, deleted items wait for up to 30 days and still use space. Look through them, then select and delete. This cannot be undone.
- Remove an app you can live without. Offload it in iPhone Storage to keep its data, or delete it.
- Delete one or two large videos. A single long video can outweigh hundreds of photos. Photos cannot sort by size, so look for clips with a long duration.
- Remove a downloaded update. If an update has partly downloaded, it may appear in the iPhone Storage list. Deleting it and trying again from Settings, General, Software Update can help.
- Clear downloads in music, podcast and video apps. Their own settings show how much they hold.
If System Data is large, read why Other storage is large on iPhone before you try anything drastic.
If the update still will not install
Open Settings, General, Software Update. It shows the size of the update. As a rough guide, an update needs more room than its download size, since iOS has to unpack it. We cannot give a fixed number, and it changes from release to release.
Some options:
- If iOS offers to temporarily remove apps and put them back after the update, that is usually safe. It reinstalls them when it finishes. Back up first if you want to be extra careful.
- You can update with a computer instead. Connect the iPhone, open Finder on a Mac, or the Apple Devices app (or iTunes, depending on your PC) on Windows, and choose Update. A computer-based update downloads the file on the computer. It may still need some room on the phone.
- If nothing works, free a little more and try again later. Rushing to delete photos you care about is the wrong response to an update.
If the camera will not take photos
The fix is the same: free enough room, then reopen the Camera. Videos need much more room than photos, so a phone that can still take a photo may stop in the middle of a recording. Higher resolution and frame rates make larger files, which you can change in Settings, Camera, Record Video.
If you are in the middle of something important, such as a trip, you can free room fast by deleting a few old videos and emptying Recently Deleted, then deal with the rest at home.
Where Poofora helps, and where it does not
Poofora is a photo cleaner for iPhone. It helps with the photo part of a full phone. Space Rescue lets you pick how much space you want to free, and builds a plan with the safest items first. Applying the plan only adds items to your Review list. Nothing is deleted until you open Review, tap Delete and confirm, and iOS asks you to confirm once more.
It does not clean apps, Messages or System Data, and it cannot see inside other apps. Deleted photos go to Recently Deleted like any others, so you must empty that album before the space comes back. Sizes shown in Poofora are estimates, and we do not promise any amount of freed space.
On the free plan, scanning and reviewing are free, with 100 welcome deletions and then 15 free deletions a day. Poofora is coming soon to the App Store.
Make it unlikely to happen again
Once the phone works, spend twenty minutes on the cause, not the symptom.
- Check what filled it. If it was video, change your recording settings.
- Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage if you use iCloud Photos and have the iCloud space. It keeps smaller versions on the phone.
- Clear duplicates and screenshots, as in how to free up storage on iPhone.
- Leave a margin. A phone that is almost exactly full tends to hit this again on the next update.
A quick checklist
- Which storage? iPhone or iCloud.
- Empty Recently Deleted after a look.
- Offload an app and delete a large video.
- Retry the update or the camera.
- Use a computer for the update if the phone still cannot manage.
- Plan a proper cleanup for the weekend.
